The first food delivery service
The facts may be more surprising than you think. The first recorded food delivery is said to have taken place in Naples, Italy, in 1889. If you want to know more, read our article.
King Umberto I and Queen Margaret of Savoy were in Naples when they wanted to try the town’s food: the delicious pizzas made by the famous pizza maker Rafaele Esposito.
The queen loved all three pizzas and she loved one in particular; Pizza alla mozzarella, with mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and fresh basil leaves (which make up the colors of the Italian flag). Esposito named this pizza after the queen herself and named it Pizza Margherita.
Delivery men called Dabbawalas (literally translated as “someone carrying a box”) brought hot lunches from home and from restaurants to the workplaces of those who needed their services.
